Dartmouth Printing Company has operated in Hanover, New Hampshire, for more than 200 years. It began as part of Dartmouth College in 1793, printing newspapers, books, pamphlets and college catalogs. In 1843, the company became a separate entity—The Dartmouth Press. While continuing to print Dartmouth College publications, The Dartmouth Press began printing such publications as The People’s Advocate, an anti-slavery and temperance publication. In 1899, Frank Musgrove purchased the company and continued printing the weekly Hanover Gazette, along with local town reports and a summer camp publication. Mr. Musgrove, who served as a state representative and state senator, owned The Dartmouth Press for almost 40 years, during which time Nelson Rockefeller worked briefly as a typesetter. Kenneth Foley purchased the company in 1938 and incorporated under the name Dartmouth Printing Company, prior to laws requiring the "Inc." addition. In 1945, Mr. Foley changed the focus of the company from college publications to short run magazines, in an effort to achieve a more even annual cash flow. Mike Smith was hired in 1963 as the company’s controller and soon began selling as well. Mr. Foley sold the company in 1969, and Mr. Smith became president. Dave Hewitt joined Mr. Smith in 1970, and together they purchased the company in 1978.
In February 1998, the company was purchased by The Sheridan Group. The Sheridan Group, headquartered in Hunt Valley, MD., consists of six printing facilities producing total annual sales of more than $200 million. Most printers who have survived to compete in today’s competitive market boast an impressive inventory of equipment and the technology necessary to put ink on paper. In addition to "iron and electronics," we believe our company presents a combination of advantages and resources increasingly scarce in today's printing/publishing market. The organization has been focused on the short run publication market since the 1960s. This focus has been the driving force behind virtually all the company’s equipment and organizational decisions. The Dartmouth commitment has produced an organization built entirely to meet the needs of our customers. While admittedly not as large as many of its competitors, Dartmouth Printing can assure you that your title will not get lost or overlooked. And as a customer of ours, there is absolutely no question where your next issue will be printed. All our titles are produced at the Lyme Road plant in Hanover, New Hampshire. We believe our size, our organizational structure, our experience and our focus combine to offer a unique opportunity for publishers who still feel the need for individualized service from their printer.
